The Judgement team are gearing up for a huge 3 days at PAX Melbourne! Lock in the 26th-28th October in your diary and make sure to pop in and say hello to the Judgement crew. We had a blast last year so in 2018 we have upped the ante to a double stall dedicated to Judgement that includes 2 tables dedicated for 3v3  demos.

Two Player Starter Box & Wave 2 Launch

PAX will feature the launch of our brand new two player starter box, as well as a number of our wave 2 heroes. It will also signal the start of the shipping phase of our wave 2 Kickstarter.

Judgement Two Player Starter Box

Backers of our wave 2 Kickstarter, who are at the convention, will be able to pick up their models on the Friday morning, and then battle it out with the Judgement crew and other players across the weekend.

Tournament Saturday Night

We will be running a 3 round tournament on the Saturday night with free entry for anyone that has Judgement models and the desire to dominate the shadow plane! It will be great to see some of the Judgement veterans lock horns with brand new players that purchased their first models at PAX itself. Barnascus Sculpt Reveal

Barnascus Sculpt Reveal

One of the highlights of our recent wave 2 Kickstarter campaign was when Shane Barnbrook went huge and pledged $5,000 to "Become a Hero!". It was a real shot in the arm for the campaign and meant Shane was able to collaborate with Judgement's designers, sculptors and illustrators, to create his very own hero. The result of this collaboration was the mighty Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac! Similar to our wave 1 backer designed heroes, Barnascus introduces something different and pushes the Judgement team to move into new areas that add a lot of variety and colour to the game. Shane was an absolute pleasure to work with and everyone involved in the Barnascus project was absolutely over the moon with the results. For the record the Barnascus illustrator was Shane L Cook and the sculptor was Tom Lishman. Here is Barnascus in all his glory, congratulations Shane, you have been carved into the history books of Judgement! :)

Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac

The hapless goblin underneath Barnascus' tank is the world famous "Itchy Nads", who makes his first appearance in the Judgement universe, however it won't be his last...

Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac

Obviously, Barnascus is another hero from our WW1/2 time line and the first to be equipped upon a mechanical device, his own personal tank platform! Barnascus is a grizzled veteran of many battles and revels in the opportunity to fight against mighty heroes from a bygone era on the shadow plan of Between.

Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac

Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac

Shane's involvement in the creation of Barnascus was not just limited to the sculpt. He was also included in the design of Barnascus' in-game rules, and once again we were able to introduce some cool themes and abilities to represent this mighty dwarf on the battle field.

Barnascus, dwarf pyromaniac

Barnascus is available as an add-on via our Kickstarter late pledges, and can be added to any existing pledge level.

Barnascus is the final sculpt, to be completed, from our wave 2 range! What an awesome collection of heroes and models we now have, and we are simply so excited about getting them manufactured and onto your table-top! Full steam ahead now!

Recruiting Allies - Vujasha, Sea Witch

Recruiting Allies - Vujasha, Sea Witch

Summoned heroes, who were victorious, are able to remain on Between for a short time after the end of a battle. For the most recent battle, the battlefield was adjacent to a region of the shadow plane covered by swamp lands. Bastian did not want to give up an opportunity, so immediately after the enemy's Effigy exploded, he made haste towards an are deep within the murky waters.

Bastian held his staff before him, pulsing magic through it to warn him of treacherous ground as he trudged through the swamp, an area of Between he had seldom walked since being trapped on Athien. No doubt the sea witch was already aware of his presence and observing him from afar, no one entered so far into her domain without her knowing, however, up to this point, she had not revealed herself.

Only moments earlier, Bastian had sensed an intruder had entered his tower, back on Athien. It seems the pesky halfling did not give up easily. Viktor was no fool, and with Al'garath by his side, he would be a dangerous adversary, however Bastian's current task was far more pressing, he could deal with Viktor's theft at a later date. Despite the irritation of having a book stolen from his personal library, there was definitely potential good to come out of it. The tome contained the true names of several powerful demons, which would enable the possessor of that knowledge to summon them to do their bidding. If Viktor planned on summoning a demon, such as Al'garath, on the plane of shadow, then that would certainly stir things up, and Bastian hoped it would awaken the old gods even further to the dangers the new gods now posed. They had lay dormant for far too long, relying on the god of time to deal with the demi-gods, since up to this point the threat was confined to the time god's home shadow plane.

Bastian stopped suddenly. He listened intently as his vision was quickly limited to a few feet by the emergence of a deep set fog.

"Why are you here, timeless one?", a voice whispered inside Bastian's head.

"I come to forewarn you, mistress of the sea, and beseech your help.", he responded. "The demigod's gaze has turned towards your home, and the mortal heroes will be waging battle here before too long, it is your souls they seek."

"Let them come, I will feed their souls to my children.", she hissed.

"The demigods have grown powerful, mistress, and their heroes are growing in number. It seems we are heading towards a cataclysmic event, I feel it is inevitable, however I ask you to thwart them as much as you can and delay their rise. I need more time."

"We serve the same master, timeless one, I will do as you ask.", she responded without a hint of mockery.

"I knew I could count on you Vujasha", Bastian said, using her true name.

Bastian turned back towards the way he came, shortly afterwards feeling the pull of his ethereal chord as his time on Between was drawing to a close. The conversation was short, however he knew things would go smoother if he took the time to meet Vujasha in person. She was a powerful ally and one he would increasingly rely upon in the days ahead. Now to deal with that pesky halfling...

Vujasha, Sea Witch

Vujasha is the 3rd, and final, wave 2 monster and the final sculpt from the core wave 2 heroes, leaving just Barnascus to go. Vujasha's sculpt continues the trend of the Judgement team pushing the boundaries of the fantasy genre. As soon as Helge's illustration was completed, we knew she would be challenging to sculpt, however, if we did it well, the result would be phenomenal. The challenge fell to Tom Lishman and he once again came through with the goods. We are so proud to have such a thought provoking and multi-faceted sculpt, as Vujasha is, in the Judgement ranks.

Vujasha, Sea Witch

The monsters of Judgement are one of the unique aspects of the system, and we, as the game's creators, take them very seriously. We want to have the very best sculpts, rules and back stories for the monsters, just as if they were heroes, and over time some of them may just evolve into heroes, as the Judgement story unfolds.

Vujasha, Sea Witch

All the wave 2 sculpts, including Vujasha, are still available via late pledges for our wave 2 Kickstarter.

Al'garath Sculpt Reveal

Al'garath Sculpt Reveal

Candlelight flickered across the pages of an ancient tome. A high pitched voice recited an incantation, then paused as the runes on the parchment glowed for an instant, before fading away, hence making the page safe to turn. A long, dirty finger nail, protruding from a small, gnarled hand, slowly lifted the corner of the page before carefully turning it over. Viktor adjusted the focus on his mechanical lens, his eyes were tired from some 18 hours pouring over the tome, however he was close this time, he could feel it. For 3 years he had searched the length and breadth of Athien to learn the true name of the demon that haunted his dreams, today he hoped that search would end.

Viktor's mastery of necromantic magic rivalled that of any native of Athien, however the natural weaknesses of his cursed race always held him back, something that would be more than compensated for, once he commanded a demon of the Abyss. The halfling had employed all his guile, cunning and magical prowess to thwart Bastian, and steal the book he currently read from the lore keeper's mythical tower. It would only be a matter of time before Bastian would become aware of the theft, Viktor thought, before pushing the thread out of his mind so he could concentrate on the task at hand. He turned another page, perhaps the hundredth time he had done it this session, yet still only part way through the book.

With a sharp inhale, Viktor paused, holding his breath. A cryptic message, woven into the words suddenly became clear to him, a pattern his subconscious had picked up on earlier, had now revealed itself to him fully. He exhaled slowly, scanning the page, and the next, and the one after, picking up pace as the algorithm required to decode the text became more familiar to him. Before long he was certain he had determined the true name of the demon, he stopped his natural urges to immediately begin the summoning ritual, and double checked his work. Summoning a demon, using an incorrect name, would be the end of him, without doubt.

Eventually, after checking a 3rd time, he leaned back in his chair, and slowly closed the book. The day had come when Viktor would finally be able to summon the demon, whose true name was now, and forever, burned into the halfling's brain. "Al'garath, you are now mine", the halfling whispered quietly to himself.

 Al'garath, Demon of the Abyss

The Judgement team are buzzing with the release of the Al'garath sculpt today. Another masterpiece by the newest sculptor on the team, Stan Kolev. Stan, who has already done the impressive Svetlana and Viktor sculpts, has backed those up superbly with an truly amazing rendition of Al'garath.

Al'garath, Demon of the Abyss

Al'garath, Demon of the Abyss

Just like every model in our entire range, we have meticulously designed and sculpted a thematic scenic base for Al'garath.

Remember that Viktor and Al'garath are sold together in a box set. The image below shows them both in scale.

Skye, Elf Monk Sculpt Reveal!

Skye, Elf Monk Sculpt Reveal!

Skye is the 12th, and final, hero to be sculpted from our wave 2 range, and we had a lot of fun with this one. He is the 3rd hero from our "space" genre, alongside Styx and Nephenee, however despite being from the future, he still adheres to the ancient monk ways, preferring to fight with a bo staff.

Skye is our first AGI base defender, so unlike Thrommel, Doenrakkar, Marcus and Skoll, he relies on not being hit rather than soaking up the critical hits of his attackers through high health or RES. This means Skye will take a bit more time to master, however his high skill cap, once mastered, can elevate the effectiveness of your Warband to a high level.

 Skye, Elf Monk Defender

We drew a lot of inspiration from various futuristic cinema releases to get the look and feel for Skye. Our aim was to get a perfect blend between traditional fantasy and the space genre, which best describes the hero himself. James W Cain was commissioned to sculpt Skye, and as usual he is risen to the occasion spectacularly, setting the entire model off with an amazing scenic base.

Skye, Elf Monk Defender

With Skye completed, the only sculpts left to do are Viktor's demon, Al'garath, Vujasha the sea witch, and then of course Barnascus, the 13th hero designed in conjunction with, "Become a Hero!" backer, Shane. However with the core 12 done we are ready to launch our pledge manager so will do so in the coming days.

Gendris Sculpt Reveal

Gendris Sculpt Reveal

Every sculpt we release generates hype, however there is a discernible rise in excitement when we finish a minotaur. The 54mm scale brings out the best in every race we do, however with minotaurs it is taken to the next level. The 3rd, and final, minotaur of the wave 2 kickstarter is Gendris. Where as Xyvera is old, weathered and a practicer of the dark arts, Gendris is in her prime, a powerful druid with an exceptional command of nature.

Judgement stalwart, Tom Lishman, has once again produced a magnificent sculpt and this is his 4th Judgement minotaur he has sculpted in the Judgement range. The only wave 2 sculpts remaining are Al'garath, Skye, Barnascus and Vujasha, so we are on the home stretch!

Viktor Sculpt Reveal

Viktor Sculpt Reveal

Hot on the heels of Svetlana Oaklost, Stan Kolev has produced another masterpiece with the Viktor sculpt. Few things can stir up interest more than a halfling warlock, particularly one that summons a lesser demon of the abyss, so we are super excited to be able to reveal Viktor.

The sculpt conveys incredible emotion, a brooding character with evil intent and a heathy hunger for power. Warlock's traditionally make pacts with powerful beings of the lower planes to augment their skills on their home plane, and Viktor is no different. After learning the name of Al'garath, a lesser demon of the abyss, Viktor is able to summon him at will on the shadow plane of Between.

Like every model in our range, Viktor ships with a thematic base and his would have to be up there with the best. Despite being just 40mm, as opposed to the standard 50mm, the base is packed with numerous warlock and tinkerer themed elements, and a sleeping cat familiar!

Viktor is the 1st model in our range mounted on a 40mm base with every other hero and monster on a 50mm, and he is also the 1st halfling hero. Another cool aspect of Viktor is his ability to summon Al'garath, a lesser demon of the abyss. Viktor is without doubt one of the highest skill cap heroes in the game and it is going to be interesting to see the impact he has on the meta once wave 2 ships and all 28 heroes are available for selection.

Updated Rulebook, Wave 2 Hero Tweaks & Barnascus rules officially released

Updated Rulebook, Wave 2 Hero Tweaks & Barnascus rules officially released

The Judgement team continue to work on two streams for the wave 2 Kickstarter, which is to manufacturer the miniatures and ensure the game's rules are in good shape. Today's blog post is about the latter including both a core rulebook update and tweaks to 4 of the wave 2 heroes. The hero changes will be included in the official Patch Notes #3, which will is scheduled for July 1st, however we felt we would release these ones now so that tournament organisers had the option of using them in their tournaments, before patch #3, if they wished. Please note that since the wave 2 models are not actually released, tournament organisers are not obliged to allow them at all, however we are encouraging TOs to allow players to include a single wave 2 hero paper-doll in their Warbands.

Core Rulebook Update

Judgement Core Rulebook Version 1.3

An out of cycle core rulebook update is not something we would normally do, however we have had to prepare it for the wave 2 Two Player Starter Box so we decided to make it available for download immediately. Version 1.3 of the Judgement core rulebook is sporting a new cover and basically includes a number of clarifications, and standardisations, based on player feedback. The core rulebook is downloadable as a PDF from the Print & Play section of our website or you can click this link here

Hero Updates

These rules updates are technically not official until 1st of July, when we publish Patch Notes #3, however we are making them available for players and tournament organisers to use if they wish. Official tournaments, run by the Judgement team, will be using these updated hero rules and they will be added to both the iOS and Android mobile apps in the coming days.

Zhonyja V1.2

 Zhonyja V1.2

We felt that Zhonyja's previous level 3 ability, Last Breath, was underwhelming and did not add anything interesting to her kit considering it only triggered when she died. Zhonyja is meant to represent a frenzied orc warrior, all rage and fury, so after a lot of consideration we decided to give her the more characterful, and potent, ability Counter Strike. This means, at level 3, Zhonyja is a scary proposition to charge particularly if she can apply a Fury token to an enemy out of activation.

Skye V1.4

Skye V1.4

The design team are very happy with where Skye basic kit sits among his defender peers. An AGI based defender provides an interesting counter point to the RES based ones and he has opened up different Warband options for many players. After several months play testing we came to the conclusion that Heroic Stand provided little counter play and could really stifle the flow of a game once it was in play. We have made 3 tweaks to it in an attempt to bring it back in line. It can no longer be cast on defenders, the range has dropped from 8" to 5", and it now grants 4 temporary health instead of 5.

Xyvera V1.6

Xyvera V1.6

Xyvera was the hero the design team used to push the boundaries. This is an important step in the evolution of any game, opening up opportunities to move into new directions and increasing the variety of tools available with future heroes. It has come as no surprise to us that she has been a difficult one to balance, however after this last batch of changes we are a lot more comfortable with where she currently sits. Corrupt Blood was changed so that both the friendly, and enemy, hero models have to be within 4" of Xyvera. Previously the enemy model only had to be within 4" of the friendly model she damaged, effectively giving this ability a 10" range allowing her to do serious damage from the safety of the backline. This change means she has to be a lot closer to the action to use Corrupt Blood.

The major change for Xyvera is her Soul Link ability, which was proving to be too easy for her to get into play and once there proved too dominant, with very little counter play. The first change was to swap her level 2 and level 3 abilities around. This moved Soul Link to level 3 meaning she would get access to it later in the game, but it also means that Diminish Will, which we feel is an interesting ability, will get to see more play time. Soul Link's cost has been raised to 1A+1F, from 1A, and finally we removed defender models as valid targets. The design team want to keep Soul Link in Xyvera's kit, and while it is still a strong ability, these changes mean it has the appropriate cost and restrictions in place to ensure the balance is maintained with other level 3 abilities.

Barnascus V1.0

Barnascus V1.0

We are also taking this opportunity to officially release the 1st version of Barnascus' rules, and giving players and tournament organisers the opportunity to allow him in their games. As many of you know, Barnascus was designed as a result of the "Become a Hero!" backer from our wave 2 Kickstarter. The design team are so pleased with the aesthetic he brings to the table and worked hard putting together rules that mirrored the fact he is a dwarf riding a tank-like platform. The one change we made from his beta version was to give him a brand new level 1 Fate ability called Grind. Simulating Barnascus grinding his opponents into the turf under his tank tracks, Grind provides the opportunity to do True Damage to multiple opponents simultaneously which gives Barny's kit a bit more bite.

Download and Mobile Apps

These updated cards are immediately available for download from the Print & Play section of our website and will be available on both our iOS and Android mobile apps within days.

Svetlana Oaklost Sculpt Reveal

Svetlana Oaklost Sculpt Reveal

Judgement has become synonymous with beautiful miniatures and it has been the cornerstone of our vision from day 1. However miniatures as good as ours are not possible without very talented sculptors, and today we are very happy to announce Stan Kolev as the 4th sculptor to work on our range.

Stan's first Judgement sculpt is Svetlana Oaklost, the dwarf druid. This was interesting because Svetlana signals a change of pace for us after bringing out dynamic sculpts like Zhonyja, Haksa, Styx and Nephenee. Svetlana is a tribute, of sorts, to the endless nights of us playing Dungeons & Dragons and getting lost in the traditional fantasy realms. Helge, who illustrated Svetlana, captured the essence of traditional fantasy wonderfully and Stan took it one step further with an exquisite sculpt.

Svetlana Oaklost, Dwarf Druid

There are many details in the sculpt that all contribute to the story of the miniature. A dwarf druid patrolling her forest at night looking to root out evil lurking in the shadows. Armed with a lantern, her trusty sickle and a forest creature ally.

Svetlana Oaklost, Dwarf Druid

Svetlana maintains our find tradition of awesome scenic bases, this time with a solid oak tree wrapped in a thick vine and playing host to an owl!

Svetlana Oaklost, Dwarf Druid

Svetlana's weapon is an beautiful take on the traditional druidic sickle.

Finally we present the in-game rules card and illustration of Svetlana who is the 9th completed sculpt in our wave 2 range.

The next sculpts in the works are Gendris the minotaur druid and Viktor the halfling warlock so stay tuned for more 54mm goodness.

Styx Sculpt Revealed

Styx Sculpt Revealed

Styx is an enigma, partly because he has been alive for almost 1000 years, and partly due to his utter devotion to his master, Zaron Bogdan. Styx originally served as a mortician in Zaron's morgue, and it was during this time he uncovered Zaron's obsession with necromancy. Before long, Styx was assisting Zaron with his experiments on the dead, and later saved his master from certain death when an angry mob of local villagers stormed their manor seeking retribution for their loved ones. Styx's "reward" for his loyalty was to be slowly, and agonisingly, transformed into a cyborg, which was the only way he could delay his mortality, and continue to serve Zaron following his transformation into the ranks of undead.

Styx was a rules and sculpting challenge for the design team. We have said it before that creating heroes devoid of straight up damage are normally more difficult to get right, both in terms of balance and being interesting to play. Similarly, we continually push ourselves to come up with unique characters and with Styx, being a mortician cyborg, we had a wonderful idea palette to work from.

James W Cain was commissioned to sculpt Styx with a directive to maintain clean lines to reflect his cyborg elements, however we also wanted to pay tribute to his time, earlier in life,  as a finely dressed mortician. For the scenic base we opted for a simplistic industrial theme, which once again suited his background.

Once again, a wonderful job by James, and he held true to the equally impressive illustration by Helge C. Balzer.

Styx will be available in our wave 2 Kickstarter which goes live in just under 2 weeks, and we have continued our drive towards raising the bar across our range.
