In the Beginning
When anyone looks at Judgement today, it will be easy to forget where it all began. Mostly, it was a couple of friends who had played miniatures games for years and spitballed the idea at a post-convention get-together. I am pretty sure similar conversations occur regularly around the world. However, the difference was we had the resources, abilities and incredible drive to make it happen.
There is no way I can do justice in this article to the challenges, the sheer amount of work and leaps of faith we have faced along the way. The original crew had a lot of professional and hobby skills; however, running Kickstarter campaigns and manufacturing physical products was breaking into new territory for all of us. We were learning things every single day.
Our business today deals with six different manufacturers from three continents across the world, and we coordinate this from Australia. The logistical challenges are significant and coupled with the fact we deal in 4 different currencies, even the variances in exchange rates challenge our profits.
Today, Gunmeister Games consists of my brother Jeff and I. We are the last two standing which means we can run the business lean, make decisions quickly and have been able to reduce the financial pressures on the company. Jeff and I have full-time jobs outside of Gunmeister Games, and while the company must be profitable, we are not driven by making those profits as high as possible.
I am providing this context as today we are announcing a significant drop in our retail prices.
From day one, the common feedback thread is the high cost of our models. Regardless of how many times we provide favourable comparisons between our miniatures and our competitors, in both quality and price, we still hear the same feedback. Judgement is the best ruleset in the industry, and there is no doubt in our minds. The game works. Transitioning the MOBA to the table-top, while tried many times before, has never been done as well as Judgement.
There is no secret that both our Kickstarters just managed to scrape over the line. Hence, while we had the funds to produce miniatures to fulfil the pledges, the lack of additional funds put enormous pressure on our ability to transition from Kickstarter to ongoing business. These extra funds came out of our own pockets. For the first few years, loaning money to the company was a common theme, with no guarantee we would ever get that money back.
Setting the retail price of our products was a challenge. We had small sales early, and no marketing budget that could get our message across. The key was to ensure we survived long enough to get in a more comfortable position, and it was tough. We also had to factor in the retail and distributor margins in our prices, to ensure we did not lose money when we eventually sold to shops and a potential distribution deal. On top of all this, we had to manage variances in exchange rates. So, we chose retail prices we believed the market could bear and forged ahead.
Today, we have a loyal group of customers, and we have gotten smarter with running the business, which has resulted in stable company finances. Also, after two unsuccessful attempts, we will not be working with distributors again. That model does not work for us, and we prefer to deal directly with retailers anyway.
Retail Price Drop
With all this in mind, today we are announcing a significant drop in our retail prices. We are taking a chance that this will make it easier for new players to get into the game and hopefully new players will offset the drop in our profits. Time will tell whether this works out for the business. If you are an existing player, and you want the game to grow, then we encourage you to spread the word.

Spread the Word
You guys, the ones who play and love the game, this is your opportunity to get more players into Judgement. These prices mean a new player can get 3v3 tournament-ready via a Starter Box and three other heroes for under USD$200. Similarly, they can get 5v5 tournament-ready for under USD$280. These dollar values are a decent entry-level to a miniatures game, particularly when you consider the quality and size of our miniatures. So, let's spread the word and take the opportunity to get more people into this beautiful game! :)
